Embarrassing ProblemsIt often happens at the worst possible moment.  You’ve always thought that you have full control of your bodily functions, but sometimes, your body just has a mind of its own.   At those times when you need to be at your best, that’s when your body decides to embarrass you.

From the simple ill-timed yawns or cotton mouth, to the mildly embarrassing hiccups or belch, and farther still, excessive sweating, an overactive bladder, or expelling gas; it happens to everyone.  And it happens more common than you think.

Your body has the tendency to act on its own when you don’t want it to.  It can be from an existing problem your body already has, such as incontinence.  Most of the time, though, stress makes your body respond in ways you don’t want it to, like producing excess sweat or gas, when you feel pressured to be at your best.

Whatever the cause, it happens to everybody, and it may be easier said than done, but the best way to deal with it is to just ignore it.

You don’t always have to explain away or acknowledge every unexpected yawn or belch.  Just keep on doing what you’re doing.  The body does what it does.  But, if it just can’t be ignored, simply say “Excuse me,” and move on.

However, there are ways to avoid these embarrassing problems, or even control them to some degree.  They may be annoying sometimes, but if you know your body and these symptoms are new to you, are persistent, or are getting worse, you should consult your doctor right away.

The following are the five most embarrassing body problems we all share, why they happen, and how you can best manage them.

Problem 1: Leaking

It can happen when you laugh too hard, sneeze, or cough, even when you exercise.  No matter what the situation, urinary incontinence can be extremely embarrassing.  Almost all women who have given birth suffer from some problems with their bladder.  There are two types.  Stress incontinence is the most common problem in women.  Urge incontinence happens when you badly need to urinate but can’t reach the toilet in time.

There are things you can do to avoid this embarrassing situation.  The most important is to get checked by a doctor to make sure you don’t have a more serious health problem.  He can also advise you on medications you can take and other treatments for your incontinence.

On your own, you can do exercises that are designed to tighten bladder muscles.  Kegel exercises, for example, help strengthen the pelvic floor and bladder training.  This exercise is done by stopping the flow of your urine mid-stream every time you urinate.  Do this several times and it will help build the muscles that control urination.

Before engaging in activities that might cause leaking, always empty your bladder first.  You should also avoid drinking diuretic liquids like cola, tea, coffee, and chocolate if you know that you’ll be out of the house or office and without an accessible bathroom.  Diuretics increase urine output; this strains the bladder and makes leaks more likely to happen.

Another solution is disposable panty liners.  Do not get the menstrual pads though.  There are incontinence products available which wick the leak or dribble away the fluid from your body and deep into the pad so you won’t feel wet.  Also, always carry an extra pair of underwear.

Problem 2: Oral Gas and Stomach Growls

Your stomach growls in the middle of your presentation at a business meeting.  Or you open your mouth to say something to a colleague and instead, a belch erupts or you start to hiccup.  Most of these symptoms usually result from a combination of gas and irritation to the diaphragm.

Gassy foods are usually the culprit.  Anxiety, though, magnifies the problem.

When you get anxious, you may have the tendency to swallow a lot of air, especially if you have the bad habit of sighing a lot.  This causes burping and hiccup.

The best defense against these problems is reducing your intake of gassy foods, especially before an important speech or meeting.  Gassy foods include cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli, beans, and for some people, dairy products and fried food.

You know which foods make you gassy.  If you’re feeling hungry and your stomach is growling, grab a light meal before going out.

You should also drink plenty of water.  When your gastrointestinal tract is dry, it is more likely to spasm.  If you are well-hydrated, however, it will reduce the likelihood that you will get a case of the hiccups or will burp at the most inopportune moments.

Problem 3: The Sweats

Some people just have overactive sweat glands.  For some though, stressful situations bring about excessive sweating.

Nervous sweating is a reflection of sympathetic nerve discharge.  When you get anxious, stress hormones like cortisol, epinephrine, and norepinephrine, are released.

To prevent this, you have to condition yourself ahead of time when you know you’ll be in a stressful situation.  You can retrain your brain by exposing yourself to the nervous situation gradually.  After some time, your body will learn not to respond to that situation with sweats.

You can also try products that control excessive sweating like an antiperspirant deodorant.  Liquids and food that causes your heart rate and respiration to speed up should also be avoided.   These include coffee, tea, chocolate, and other caffeinated food or liquid.  Hot and spicy foods also contribute to excessive sweating.

Another tip to keep cool is to have a glass of ice water nearby.  If needed, hold it against your wrist to help control the sweats.  Carrying a handkerchief also helps.

Problem 4: Dry Mouth and Yawning

You feel your mouth going dry when you find yourself face to face with the woman you’ve been fantasizing about.  Your mouth gets so dry you find it difficult to speak.  Or you’re in a lunch meeting with the boss and you can’t help it, you start yawning while he’s telling you about his weekend with the kids.

Yawning occurs when you breathe too shallowly, which in turn tends to happen when you feel tired or nervous or anxious.  Also, breathing slowly through the mouth plus the release of stress hormones both reduce saliva production, which then causes cotton mouth.

A very easy solution to both problems is sucking on a piece of hard candy.  If you’re a yawner when you get nervous, well you can’t swallow and yawn at the same time.  The candy will also help keep your mouth producing saliva while you’re sucking on it, which will prevent your mouth from getting dry.  A glass of icy cold water kept nearby also helps, especially if you are going to be speaking.

But don’t chew gum.  Chewing the gum makes you swallow more air, which then may cause you to yawn, and worse, may also make you belch.

Problem 5: Sex Mishaps

All our common body problems can be easily ignored, no matter how embarrassing they may be, in most situations.  But when they rear their ugly heads during an intimate moment, don’t you feel like you just want to die right then and there?  But they do happen, and with good reason.

Sex, and more particularly orgasm, makes you give up control of your body; specifically your sphincter muscles which control urine and bowels.  If you have a full bladder or have eaten gassy foods prior to sex, it will be very difficult not to let some of that go during the heat of the moment.

What can you do?  Well don’t be afraid to lose control of your body and hold back from having an orgasm or enjoying your partner.  But you can save yourself from disgrace by emptying your bladder before and after sex.  Not only will you not ruin the moment by having leaks or getting gassy, you can also avoid getting sex-related UTI.

You should also stay away from heavy or gassy foods if you’re expecting to have sex; and don’t drink a lot just before jumping into bed.  You should especially avoid carbonated drinks, which are both liquid and gas, and coffee and tea, which are diuretics.

Sadly, however, sometimes these things just happen anyway.  Well what’s done is done, just smile, excuse yourself, and move on.

24 Ways To Start Your Day Right

Start Your Day RightNot everybody is a morning person.

Most people enjoy staying up late drinking or just watching their favorite movie at home with every intention of waking up as late as they possibly can the next day.

This is a bad habit that brings about a stressed mind and a stressful day.

But if you start your day right, your day will be more fruitful and fulfilling, and you won’t even think twice about missing your usual late night habits because you’ll be looking forward to another beautiful morning.

1. Keep your blinds or curtains halfway open at night when going to sleep.

When the sun rises in the morning, the natural light signals your biological clock that it’s time to wake up, by increasing your adrenaline levels and decreasing your melatonin levels.  It’s important that you allow yourself at least seven hours of sleep every night so you’ll always wake up refreshed.  Over time, you can completely rely on your biological clock instead of the shrill ringing of your alarm clock, to which you wake up in an annoyed mood.

2. Give yourself a few minutes “waking up.”

Set your alarm clock 15 minutes early so you can take your time waking up and brushing off those sleep cobwebs, instead of jumping out of bed.  While you’re lying down on your bed, you can mentally prepare yourself for your morning routine and the day ahead.  Stretching your muscles before getting up will help wake up your body and mind and get the motors running smoothly.

3. Do some minor stretching exercises.

As mentioned above, stretching will help wake up your body muscles by enhancing the flow of blood throughout your body and giving your muscles their dose of oxygen.  Try these minor stretches: while still on your back, lift your arms and reach up to stretch your fingers, hand, wrist, and arms.  Then stretch your toes, feet, ankles, and legs.  When you stand up, stretch your neck and back.  Stretching your muscles is a great way to kick off the morning.

4. Sit down on a chair under the shower for a few minutes.

Use a plastic chair to sin on under the shower while the warm/hot water beats on your back, giving you a relaxing and energizing massage.  Do this for a couple of minutes then remove the chair and finish bathing.

5. Give yourself a “pep talk.”

While eating your breakfast and drinking your coffee, read motivational material, like a poem or a quote, to give you a positive mindset, especially after reading the newspaper or listening to the morning news.  If you start your day with a positive outlook, you will be more productive.

6. Take vitamins with your breakfast.

Multivitamins go a long way towards boosting a healthy lifestyle.  Multivitamins, aside from their nutritional value, are a great way to boost your energy, much like coffee does.

7. Avoid stressing your mind with early-morning decisions.

Devote your mornings for pure relaxation by making zero decisions.  You can accomplish this by making your plans the night before, like what you’ll wear to work, what you’ll have for breakfast, what errands to run, or how you’ll get to work, among others.  You should also stick to a morning routine as daily variations may only cause unnecessary delays and stress.

8. Take a few minutes to cuddle with your kids.

Waking up a grouchy kid early in the morning to get ready for another day at school is not a good way to start the day.  Instead of the usual early morning squabble with your kids, you can wake up your teenager by sitting on his bed and stroking his hair.  If your child is still young, you can cuddle with him and slowly wake him up with a hug and tiny kisses.  These are precious moments you should take advantage of while you can still have them.  And you ensure that you and your kid will have a nice start to both your days.

9. Listen to music.

While you are in the shower, getting dressed, or preparing your breakfast, you can relax your mind by listening to music or doing some quiet thinking.  This is a great way to energize your brain for the day ahead.

10. Wake up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee.

If you can afford it, you can buy a coffee machine that has a timer you can program to start brewing your beans at the same time every morning.  Waking up to the strong smell of coffee in the morning will energize you even before you take that first sip.  Caffeine is best taken in the morning, when your central nervous system needs a strong stimulant to increase your energy and muscular activity.  A study has shown that caffeine can improve clear-headedness, happiness, and calmness, as well as sharpen focus and thought processes, but remember to take caffeine in moderation.

11. Don’t forget to brush your tongue.

Just brushing your teeth after you wake up does not get rid of all the bacteria that thrive in your mouth.  Say hello to minty fresh breath by brushing your tongue for at least one minute.

12. Pop a baby aspirin into your mouth everyday.

Studies have shown that one aspirin a day can reduce your risk for heart disease by half.  But don’t forget to consult your doctor first, especially if you are taking other medication, like supplements.

13. A small amount of sugar can be good for your memory.

A teaspoon or less in your coffee, or a cup of orange juice will give you enough sugar to boost your memory recall, especially for those who are in their 60s and older.  A doughnut may be too much, though.

14. Check your daily calendar.

You should have made a list of all the things you need to remember for a particular day the night before.  This way, you can simply read the calendar or white board in your kitchen to remind yourself of the errands you have to run or appointments you have to go to while you sip your morning coffee.  This is a great way to structure your day in your mind to avoid stressing over something you’ve forgotten.

15. Take 500 mg of calcium citrate.

Calcium Citrate is better absorbed by the body than calcium carbonate, which is usually found in antacids.  You should take another 500 mg before going to sleep.

16. Drink at least eight ounces of water when you wake up.

You need to replenish your liquids every morning after a whole night of fasting.

17. Make a daily checklist for your kids.

If you have kids, you can avoid chaos by making a list of all the things each kid needs to finish before leaving for school, like brushing their teeth, making their bed, preparing their school bag, and others.  You can reinforce this morning routine by taking away something, like computer or PlayStation time, if they don’t follow the list.  Additionally, you’ll be teaching your kids structure and discipline.

18. Have a catch-all basket for each family member.

You can place this by the front or back door for easy access.  This is where the keys, purse, backpack, school papers, hats, and so on can be placed so you can easily find them in the morning before leaving the house.

19. Use separate bathrooms or take turns.

You and your partner should spend bathroom time in private.  Even if both of you are still madly in love with each other, sharing a bathroom may cause small annoyances to each of you and may result in a stressful start to both your days.

20. A quick shower may do, but be efficient.

It’s okay to take a quick shower in the morning if you already took a long and cleansing one the previous night before bed.  But for those who are not into showering at night, you can still be quick with your morning bath by using two-in-one products to save time, like a cleanser with a moisturizer, or a shampoo and conditioner combination product.  Even if you’re in a hurry, don’t forget to wash the hot spots: your groin and underarms.  Just don’t skip out on your personal hygiene.

21. Have an emergency outfit ready.

Set a side a complete outfit that includes socks, hose, jewelry, belt, tie, etc. that you can just grab on a morning when you wake up late.

22. Dry yourself off with more efficiency.

Use a large, 100 percent cotton bath sheet to towel yourself dry.  Squeeze the excess water from your hair and towel it off too, and let it air-dry while you put on your make up.  If you can, blow-dry your hair using a high-energy hair dryer, one with at least 1,600 watts.

23. Do your exercises in the morning.

This will give you a boost of energy to get your day started, releasing endorphins that will last for most of the day.  Additionally, you will be more likely to stick to your exercise regimen if you get it out of the way first thing in the morning; then, you won’t spend all day thinking up excuses to skip your routine.

24. Give away kisses.

Don’t forget to kiss each and every member of your family, including your pets, before you or they leave the house.  This is a positive habit that will never fail to start your day right because you’ll always be reminded of the good things you have in your life.

Trusting Yourself

Since I am essentially an advice columnist (and a counselor and intuitive tarot reader who gives advice for a living) I am about to give away what amounts to state secrets.

The big secret is—You can trust yourself.

When I work with my clients as they transition from dieting and self hatred to intuitive eating and body love, one of the biggest parts of the journey is supporting them in learning to trust themselves.

Very often the first part of learning to trust themselves is that they trusted themselves enough to know that when they found me, it was worth taking the time to work with me.

Similarly, you found this blog, and perhaps certain of our weekly encounters really resonated with you and you took them to heart. Perhaps you practiced some of the tips, even if they felt a little silly at first. You did that because some part of you – that part that’s connected to the deep knowing that we all have as humans – told you that trying that tip was going to be healing in some way.

Part of the Body Love Wellness Program is helping people reconnect with their bodies. I do this in a number of different ways. In this blog, we’ve used mainly a mind-centered approach towards changing your thoughts about your body. This mind-centered approach can be very healing, especially for mind-centered people who like to read blogs!

Another pathway of change that you can employ is starting to love your body through your senses. This body-centered approach is also very healing, as you learn to slow down and savor your body through feeling into your senses. I hope to discuss this more in coming weeks. Many times when we talk about the senses, we think mainly of the 5 senses—sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste. Exploring and savoring each of these senses is a great practice for getting in touch with your body, but there is also a 6th sense, which is our intuition and our connection with the Universe.

The sixth sense, I believe, ties together all of our senses. It is also more than that, as it connects us with knowledge that we don’t think we have. This 6th sense allows us to know, on a deep level, when something is right and something is not right.

You know when you’re hungry or full. You know when you’re tired or angry or annoyed. You know when someone is trying to convince you of something that isn’t for you. You know what you need and what you don’t. Learning to trust that knowledge is the essence of embracing the 6th sense.

We’ve all learned to heap logic atop our intuitions. Intuition has been discredited for years. Don’t make the mistake of discrediting your intuition. Listen to it, and it will begin to speak louder; just give it time. When you can really hear your intuitive sense, you will increasingly feel as though you’ve entered into the flow of your life.

Your practice this week is to connect with your sixth sense. Pay attention to your hunches. Notice what your inner voice says. Notice what your typical reaction to that voice is. Is it respect or do you discredit it? Try following a hunch and see where it leads you. The more you learn to trust your intuition, the more you will learn to trust yourself.
